Since LJ has decided to show location details for commenters for anyone with IP logging turned on, I have been through the communities I run to turn this option off.

So, on the privacy tab for each community I selected 'log IP addresses for nobody' - and it is STILL SHOWING THE DETAILS.

Help, anyone?

I just started the same process, with the same effect. It's all fucked up! I decided to wait 24 hours for LJ to sort its sorry arse out a bit and then try again.

Why oh why much LJ always try and fix that which is not broke?

I'm wondering if the owner of the comm still sees the info, even though it's turned off. Would you check a couple of my comms for me and see if you see that info as a member?

I don't think I'm allowed to -- only journal/comm owners can see that info, I believe. In any case, it looks like someone's resolved the issue below! :)

Disabling IP logging isn't retroactive. The info that's been logged in the past stays where it is; only new comments won't show IPs and locations. Afaik that how it's always worked (minus the new locations of course).

I second what's said ^up there^. It's retro-active, switching it off only disables future comments, anything before that will still be there.

I'm just about to post in my journal to say IP logging is off so it's safe, I'm really pissed about this, yes, the info has always been available, but seeing loads of IP addresses is just not the same as loads of comparable location details and some people are reporting some very detailed locations, not just the nearest metropolis, but small towns and suburbs - and even listing past locations so tracking movements - so NOT cool.

I think they're backing off now with this idea - or so I've read elsewhere - so that's something, at least.

Good. It's something, late again as usual, why they can't use their heads and THINK about how this is going to affect their users I have no idea. Thanks for letting me know.

I think it's sorting itself out now - just some stupid new feature LJ choose to implement that isn't very popular AT ALL!

Huh, I went to turn it off, and apparently at some point in the past I already had. ::hugs:: Thanks for the v-gift, love! Hope this week has been kind to you.

You're welcome lovely, and I'm doing okay, thank you ♥

I haven't used that feature in a long time, and I know a lot of my flist are now saying they don't either - but you're saying I should use it for security reasons? I'm just a little confused =)

I thought it was there (and honestly I never thought to turn it off - sorry if that's bad), so that if someone left threatening spam or something, there would be a trail. *shrugs* I could be dumb.

Ello :) As you're maintainer of communities, you will ALWAYS be able to see IP information, I think (at least that's how it worked for me in the past) but no one else will be able to, along with the retro-active thing too :)

That's what I'd figured; thanks lovely =)

Will reply to your email once I've sorted out my leave at work ♥
